Creating a vision board

One of the most important aspects in life is to stay diligent about being healthy. This includes all areas of your life – your relationships, your finances, and your physical health, to name a few.

I find that I often need reminding of the things I am pursuing. I’ve started to listen to finance podcasts and reading self-help books “prescribed” to me by my doctor, and trying to daily remember to drink my water and move my body. I’ve been known to wake up and eat a donut for breakfast and think “oh yeah… I was going to be more aware of what I eat.”  It’s like I just FORGET.

That’s where vision boards come in. A vision board gives you the opportunity to showcase your dreams and goals, and to encourage you to remember what you ultimately want so you aren’t tripped up by what you temporarily desire (I’m looking at you, chocolate chip cookies). I want to show you the vision board I made, how it is helping me stay focused, and how you can make one too!

STEP ONE: IDENTIFY YOUR SPECIFIC DREAM

You’ll want your vision board to be specific to one area of your life. It’s the difference between “I want to travel the world” (a very broad statement) and “I can’t wait to board this plane to ______” (a very specific destination and path to get there). Don’t say “I want to be happy” and find a bunch of pictures of happy people. Staring at pictures of other people having what you want isn’t the way to go.

For my vision board, my specific dream was: BEING INTENTIONAL WITH MY PHYSICAL HEALTH. Making sure I exercised at least 20 minutes a day, and tracking my weight… not necessarily about losing tons of weight, but I find that if I don’t track my weight, I can easily gain 10 pounds without realizing it. Still looking at you, chocolate chip cookies.

STEP TWO: COLLECT WHAT YOU WANT

I pulled out inspirational papers I had and went through some health magazines to find and cut out phrases that inspired me. Don’t be afraid to claim things! Cut out bold statements! For example, I decided to add the phrase “I’m crushing my goals!” so that I can read it to myself and challenge myself to live up to it.

STEP THREE: MAKE IT INTERACTIVE

This, to me, is the most crucial step of them all. Pinterest says that dreams don’t work unless you do. Identify an actual course of action, and then figure out a way to chart that. My goal for this vision board, if you remember, was to track my weight and stay active. So I created two separate tracking sheets: work outs and weigh ins. There weren’t any fancy printables or anything because I find that writing things down is a really powerful way to get them to stick with me.

STEP FOUR: DISPLAY IT WHERE YOU CAN SEE IT

This might be kind of weird for y’all, but I chose to put my vision board in my bathroom, because I am in my bathroom EVERY MORNING. That’s also where the scale is, so I can track my weight and immediately write it down. One of the forms of health we should always be striving for is dental health. If you’ve followed my debt repayment journey, you’ll know that I’ve spent a LOT of money taking care of my mouth. If you’re not brushing every morning when you wake up, YOU SHOULD BE! It’s important for dental health AND it weirdly helps you feel awake and refreshed.

After brushing my teeth, I take some time to swish with LISTERINE® Total Care mouth wash. In lab studies, it’s shown that using LISTERINE® Total Care produces 50% stronger teeth than brushing alone. It prevents cavities, restores enamel, helps strengthen teeth and kills bad breath germs. Plus it gives me some time to read over my vision board (which is strategically and slightly comically placed opposite my toilet) every morning.

I picked up the LISTERINE® Total Care mouthwash at Walmart, and I even picked up the LISTERINE® POCKETPAKS® to stay alert and focused throughout my day.

I pulled one out while I was at a coffeeshop working and it was CRAZY how fast it dissolved in my mouth and left my breath feeling just-brushed-my-teeth fresh. And they’re cute and a totally convenient size!

If you’re not already being diligent about taking care of your teeth, now is a great time to start. and Listerine is a great place to start. They are currently offering a $0.75 off coupon here, so you can be careful with your money AND your teeth!

Have you ever made a vision board?
If you were to make one RIGHT NOW, what would the focus be? I’d love to see pictures if you have one!
Also let’s discuss how crazy it feels to drink cold water when your mouth tastes like mint.

  1. I love the idea of making the vision board interactive. I think I’ll add some actual lists and charts to mine. Thanks for the tip. #client
