If you’ve been following me on social media for at least one full seasonal year, you’ll know that when the seasons change my face FREAKS OUT. My face will literally become chapped if the weather goes from cold to hot too quickly. Going outside will HURT MY FACE and it’s miserable.
I’ve started to live by this new mantra of “if something is bothering you, do something about it if you can.” That said, I developed a skin care routine that has helped my skin calm down and transition from one season or climate to the next without ruining my life. So far I’ve been able to keep my face smooth and soft and very un-chapped using this routine and I figured it was worth sharing.
This is the skeleton of my daily routine. Obviously if I’ve applied makeup or decided to use a face mask, it has a few additional steps.
STEP ONE: SONIC CLEANSE.
Clarisonic sent me their Mia 1 Cleansing brush to review and I was SO EXCITED to try it. I’ve seen a lot of people posting about how they will never go back to cleaning with a washcloth or their hands, and I’m on that bandwagon. They sent me their Refreshing Gel Cleanser and two brush heads. I chose to go with the deep pore cleansing brush head to use with the gel cleanser because in addition to my face getting chapped, my pores are sometimes out of this world and could use all the gentle cleaning possible. The Mia 1 is gentle enough to use twice a day, and I love how EASY it is to use – especially in the morning when the coffee is still in the pot and not in my mug, you know? PLUS it gets your skin SIX TIMES cleaner than if you just used your hands!
All you have to do is apply the gel to the brush head, and then slowly move in small circles on your forehead, down your nose and on your cheeks. When I’m done, my face feels so soft and clean!
ps being married means I now have someone to 1. take pictures of me and 2. talk to while I wash my face. That combination leads to pictures of me talking while I wash my face like this one. 😀
STEP TWO: TONE
After getting my face squeaky clean, I squirt some witch hazel and drip a drop of lemon essential oil onto a cotton swab and gently rub it on my face. Witch hazel is a natural astringent, which means it removes excess oil from your face. Lemon oil has antibacterial and anti fungal properties and plus it smells so freaking uplifting.
STEP THREE: MOISTURIZE
I top it all off with an all-natural rose cream from Soap and Sunshine that leaves my face feeling ultra hydrated but not at all greasy, sticky or oily. A small amount on my hand, gently rubbed on my face + neck is the perfect ending to the routine. If it’s the morning, I also add a tiny bit of 100% Pure’s Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream under my eyes because…. well, obviously!
That’s it! I’m all about efficiency so instead of using a bazillion products, I try to find a few that work really well and stack them. The Mia 1 brush is a game changer, though. One of the things I love THE MOST is that I don’t have to use my hands to wash my face. Sometimes I don’t remember to wash my hands immediately before cleaning my face, and touching your face with your hands is kind of gross – think of all the germs and stuff you carry on your hands!
