Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about blogging. I’ve been reading articles about increasing traffic and engaging readers and how to take nice pictures and blah blah blah.
You know what blog posts of mine get the most traffic? The ones I post to my Facebook profile, where I invite people I am relationally connected to are invited to take a glimpse into my life.
and you know what my life ISN’T?? It’s not recipes (because I can’t cook) or fashion (because I’m not super great at getting dressed) or workout motivation (just ask my FitBit) or organizing ideas (I cram everything I own into one bedroom) or decorating ideas (of my one crammed full bedroom, no thanks) or nice pictures (because I’m not that great at taking pictures). There’s no marriage advice (because I’m not married) or parenting tips (no kids) or date ideas (no “person.”) or debt repayment (my current debt is very small).
I think blogs started as a place for people to share life. It was a glimpse into the messy reality of life. and then I think blogging as a career became a thing and suddenly there were dollar signs to be accrued by sharing life – and in order to get those dollar signs your everything had to be or look a certain way.
and that is fantastic for people who are into that kind of blogging.
But I can’t do it.
I hate that I never want to post my blog to my Facebook because it usually feels SO BORING and SO UNINTERESTING to the people I actually know in real life.
You know what? I’m freaking hilarious in real life. I have a lot to say and I love to laugh and I think I am pretty fun.
Then I sit down to write about how funny I am and I have to think of a title with keywords for my little SEO plugin to help boost. and then I freeze and start wondering what picture I’ll use to pin to a board on Pinterest and how come nobody really pins my blog stuff anyway and….
it’s freaking exhausting.
I literally can’t even.
I can’t odd, either.
I just can’t do it. I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m OVER lifeSTYLE blogging. I’m just gonna be a life blogger, and I’m not going to be tied to the outcome.
Anyway. Look at this mug that Kristen had waiting for me when I got to Nashville. Ernie and I frequently get in twitter battles over this phrase, adding whatever clever rhyme we can think of to the end of “Too blessed….” and it’s my new favorite mug because it reminds me of some of my favorite people. It says “too blessed to be stressed!”
{similar mug here}
Speaking of stressed, though…. there’s some stuff weighing pretty heavy on my heart right now. Can you all pray for me? Thanks in advance 🙂
you are my favorite. let’s just life blog. please? because. ya know? you are so funny. I love the mug. I love you. andddd i can;t wait for April 5th ok bye
YAY let’s go on an easter egg hunt! and life blog about it bahahha
I love this. I’m all for just blogging about life and not having to fit into a category box. And everything I own is also stuffed into one bedroom, I feel weird trying to take “outfit” photos, and I also can’t contribute to marriage/parenting/dating advice either. Anyway, I like your blog. 🙂
thank you emily margaret!!! the category box is so lame and suffocating. sometimes it’s hard to come up with blog content when most of what you see is stuff that’s so irrelevant, you know? we gotta stick together 🙂 🙂 🙂
Thank you for blogging your life!! You are an amazing person in real life, and getting to read some of your amazingness on your blog from afar makes me love you even more. 🙂
and soon you’ll be here <3 i love you. the other day i was thinking about how some of my best friends live far away and your name came to mind. because i cherish and love you so much!!! <3
I cannot wait!!! God willing, four more months…
<3 <3 <3
I recently stumbled onto your blog and I like that you are so open to being “real”. It is much easier to relate to you than a lifestyle blogger who seems to have it all together. I too don’t fit into a category box, which is why my blog is called Dabblism.com. It is all about dabbling in different areas of life. I like the term “life” blogger!
