the green bridge.

Growing up, I never really knew the difference between the I-5 bridge and the 205 bridge. I always clarified by saying “the green bridge, right?”
I drive over the I5 bridge almost every day. Every so often I see people riding bikes or walking across it and I think ” I should do that.” So I put it on my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. It was supposed to happen in February, but you know… it didn’t. The idea keeps popping up at the most inconvenient times, and finally I said screw it and made Tim and Anna come across with me. It started out nice, a little chilly… then it started raining.
But man. I’m so glad I did it. Gives you a whole new perspective to use your feet instead of wheels.
And of course, via instagram:

After watching SPORTS, Leveryll gave me control of the remote, so naturally I picked SAY YES TO THE DRESS. The boys watched one whole episode!

Five of Fifty + A Year of Challenge.
28th December 2012 | 101, 50 questions | 2 comments

I just spent a few hours going through my 101 list and making a plan for the year. A plan that will get 49 tasks on my list crossed off. That’s huge! In the past year, I’ve only managed to cross off 15 things. There was no plan, I just occasionally remembered the list and tried to find the most convenient thing to cross off.
I’ll spare you the 4 pages of notes in my notebook, but the main thing is that every month, I’m going to take on a different challenge. You are more than welcome to join me; either pick the same challenge I’m doing, or come up with your own thing. Or hey – you should start your own 101 in 1001 list. I’ll help you cross a few things off!
Here’s a list of what my monthly challenges are for the first half of the year. I’m scheduling blogs to post on the first day of each month with a specific list of what my goals are for that month, and I’m not letting any of them be vague!
January: A different outfit every day for a month {#13}
February: Wear pink every day for a month {Happy Valentine’s Day!} {#78}
March: Write 1,000 words every day for a month {#8}
April: Pray for someone I don’t like every day for a month {#86}
May: Take a picture of 101 things that make me happy {#65}
June: Leave 101 encouraging post-its {#24}
What do you think?
{16-20/50 questions that will free your mind}
16. How come the things that make you happy don’t make everyone happy?
Well first, what makes me happy? Baby elephants, the color pink, glitter, when people say or write my name, colors in the sky, going on walks, driving for a long time in the car. Some of them are just my personality. I’m easily pleased at the hands of other people. It doesn’t take much. The other things, like colors in the sky, walks and driving long periods in the car are more about my desire to soak up every detail that I come across in life. I want to live slowly, fully and completely aware of the beauty of everything around me.
17. What one thing have you not done that you really want to do? What’s holding you back?
Start my people project, a chance to share other people’s stories. I want everyone to know and connect with everybody I know. The thing that holds me back is being insecure and uncertain. It is hard for me to start something until I am positive I’ve carefully planned it out, and this is something I need to jump into and figure out as I go, not worrying about making mistakes or finding better ways to do it after it’s started.
18. Are you holding onto something you need to let go of?
Yes; aren’t we all? For me, I’m holding onto the fear that I’m not good enough or important enough. It’s like that friendship bread stuff, where once you get it you’re supposed to give some of it away, but it keeps growing and you’re stuck with it forever unless you give it all away. I let go my insecurities, but keep just enough to let it grow. Every time I feel let down, overlooked or unimportant, it helps my fear grow until it’s a giant monster I have to deal with again.
19. If you had to move to a state or country besides the one you currently live in, where would you move and why?
The obvious and easy answer is Portland, Oregon.. but since it’s a mere 5 minutes away, I’ll go farther than that. I’d probably move to Pasadena, CA. It is one of my favorite cities in the whole world, close to a bunch of people I love. I lived close enough to it, but I’d make sure my address had Pasadena on it. Sometimes I wish I was trying to find a seat at Starbucks in Old Town, going for walks with the Carroll babes, or eating hard boiled eggs with the Gray family. Obviously that’s the past and the present there would be different, but still.
20. Do you push the elevator button more than once? Do you really believe it makes the elevator faster?
Haha… yes, I do.. but it’s less about thinking it speeds up the elevator and more for reassurance that I actually pressed it. I don’t press it multiple times at once, but if it’s taking awhile I’ll press it again just so I can be sure that I pressed the right button.
101 in 1001 update.

SLOWLY but SURELY I am chipping away at my 101 in 1001 list. I’ve edited and changed a few things around, but I won’t bore you with the deets.
First and apparently of highest importance: Last Thursday night, I stayed for dinner at the Pattersons. After dinner, they asked if I was in a hurry to get home, which I wasn’t. So they invited me to stay and watch… The Sound of Music. WHICH MIGHT NOT SEEM LIKE A HUGE DEAL. Except I’d never seen The Sound of Music, a fact that has always surprised people around me. After watching it, I asked Hilary if it was her favorite movie. She said yes. 1 down, 4 to go on #31, watch 5 of my friends’ favorite movies.
I am easily discouraged and wondered how I would ever make my bed for a month, since I am rarely home for 31 days at a time. Instead of giving up, which is usually what I do, I decided to get creative. On a piece of paper I wrote down 1-31, and every morning I was at home, I would make my bed and check it off the list. Last Friday, this is what happened:

DONE. And you can see the other two I’m working on: a month without soda (good grief, when I finish that one I’m going to write an entire blog explaining the drama that is a soda-less month) and a month of completed “to-do” lists. You’ll notice that I’ve already had to start over once with my to-do list one. Oh well… I live by grace!
The one I am the most excited about: #66 is to take my parents out 10 times. Last Monday, my dad and I went to Bushel and Peck. I don’t know why, but I’ve been enamored with this place since I first heard about it and couldn’t imagine anyone better to take with me to finally check it out than my dad. We both got breakfast sandwiches and a wonderful vanilla lemonade/berry iced tea concoction that was tart and refreshing and perfect.

I realized that my 101 in 1001 list will not slowly but surely cross itself off. Some of them, like the sleeping in 25 different places will absolutely cross themselves off, but others take intention and planning. Like horseback riding.
Have you done or are you doing the 101 in 1001 days challenge?
Why or why not?
Happy Halloween :)

One of my 101 things to do in 1001 days is to sew a dress, and Rhoda says my halloween costume counts.
While we were in California, I decided to do something I have never done… I bought a pair of sequins mouse ears. “I guess I’ll be Minnie Mouse for Halloween,” I told my mom to justify the $20 purchase.
As soon as I got home, the hunt for a red and white polka dot dress (at a thrift store, obviously) began. I couldn’t find anything so I decided I’d make a red tulle skirt. Then I found a red dress I figured I could add white spots to. And THEN I found this skirt. (So yes, I do have a bunch of red ribbon and tulle, plus a red dress… that I don’t know what to do with now.)

See, I’ve only used a sewing machine once before.
A couple snips and sews later and I had my Minnie Mouse dress.

(Speaking of DONE… I just plowed through my morning to-do list in 20 minutes. Patting myself on the back as I type this.)
and some Halloween thoughts from Sue Sylvester via the daily Glee calendar (which I have kept up with ALL YEAR LONG, even at camp!)

(what’s up with the parentheses? gosh)

guess what my current fave song is? if you guessed john mayer’s cover of free fallin, you are absolutely correct. don’t just take my word for it, either. look at what last.fm says about my most played track over the past month:

i seriously have been curling up under my blankets and watching the rain and listening to this song. i even have been laying on my bed with my head over the edge, watching raindrops fall up my window, a tradition usually only reserved for lover you should’ve come over by jeff buckley.
there is something about john mayer’s voice that slows me down when i am going too fast. so i have been listening to my quiet john mayer playlist.
it’s good to have something to keep my feet on the ground when i feel like i’m going crazy.

a few years ago i made a 101 in 1001 list. and it was full of really ridiculous things, stupid things that i put on there in hopes of using the list to become a “better” person. i’d hoped that by being able to complete that list, i’d transform from a caterpillar into a butterfly, becoming some new person as a result.
so that failed. because a list like this isn’t about changing your identity; it’s about living more in your own identity.
that said, i have created a new list for myself. and i’m not starting on january 1st, because it’s not a resolution. i made my list of 20 – 11′s and it’s been fun and great, but it kind of had the same feel as my first 101 list. i never took LIFE into account.
i have spent time over the past month or so making the list which is at the top of my page where it says 101 in 1001. and i’m ready to go.
last night i went and saw allen stone at mississippi studios. and let me tell you…. ugh. so proud of him. i almost cried when i was walking back to my car because i am SO HAPPY for his success and the way people embrace and love him. he deserves it. all of it.
i took a 2 hour nap, drank some coffee, went to the airport, drank more coffee, and now i am sitting at seatac. boarding is about to begin.
…and then i will be in los angeles. {!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!}
ps i totally just realized i can write blogs and set them to publish later, and that is really exciting.
